Hi, it’s Steve from PartSelect. Today we’re going to show you how to change
the combination start device on your refrigerator. It’s a really easy job. All we’re going to need is a quarter-inch
knot driver, and maybe a pair of needle-nose pliers. Let me show you how we do it. Now to do this repair, we will need to gain
access to the back of the refrigerator, so we’ll have to pull it forward, disconnect
the power, and then we can remove the back panel. Now to remove the back panel, we’ll need to
remove some quarter-inch hex head screws. [music]
Then, carefully remove that cardboard panel and set it aside. Your model may have a cover over that start
device or it may just have a spring clip. We’re simply going to disengage that clip
and pivot that out of the way. Next, we can just grasp the whole assembly
and pull it right off the side of the compressor, and then pivot it out. Then we can remove the capacitor. Just pull it away from the start device and
set that aside. Next, we’ll remove the wire harness. It may have a locking tab on it, which you’ll
need to release, and then we can discard the old start device. Next, we’ll reinstall that capacitor onto
the new device and line up the pin with the round hole in that capacitor. Press it firmly onto the device, and then
reconnect the wire harness. Make sure that their locking tab engages. Then we’ll line up that start device with
the three pins on the compressor. Then make sure it’s firmly seated on the side
of the compressor. Next, we’ll reattach that retaining strap. [music]
Now if your original start device was thicker than the replacement one, you will probably
need to modify that retaining strap. If you increase the angle of that bend in
the middle, you can probably make that fit properly. You may have to experiment a little bit with
it. Now, we can put the back panel back on. We’ll tuck that upper edge of that back panel
into this little groove that goes right across the back. It is important that the back panel be properly
installed for proper operation of the refrigerator. Make sure that we have it fully extended across
the back and that the grill opening is clear on it. We can now push the refrigerator back into
position and reconnect power. We’re now ready to reconnect the power and
our repair is complete. I told you it was an easy job. Thanks for watching and good luck with your
repair.
